Back to Downieville

There’s not much to do in this small city
The geese are fun to look at but not for long
How I miss that ole mining town I grew up in
Where we’d sit around a campfire and sing a song

Take me back to Downieville
Where the river’s never still
Where they all know me and my family
Where the mosquitoes are biting
The cold swimming hole is inviting
Where it’s OK for me to be just me

Grandpa helped build my Daddy’s cabin up there
Where we all lived til Grandma died long ago
I wanted to travel and see the great big world
But I had the world at home, how was I to know

I’d want to go back to Downieville
Where the river’s never still
Where they all know me and my family
Where the rapids are exciting
Where I learned all about songwriting
Where I’ll be the man I’ve always wanted to be

I know I’ll never find a place like Downieville
so take me back there where the air is so clean
And the people are good-hearted
It’s where my story started
Where my uniform will be a t-shirt, boots & jeans

Take me back to Downieville
Where the river’s never still
Where they all know me and my family
Where the mosquitoes are biting
The cold swimming hole is inviting
Where it’s OK for me to be just me

Where it’s OK for me to be just me.

Lyric Notes:  Of course I had to write this. We would go on vacations with the Haas family and the Daniel Family up there and have a great time. On Facebook, I saw a message from Gloria Daniel to me, and I suddenly realized I had a song to write about that place.  So this is dedicated to all of the people our family went there with.  Maybe we’ll all be up there again one day.
