The Better Thing To Do

Before you took a walk outside
And I never saw your smile again
We talked for quite a while
And fondly remembered when

The rooster crowed that morning
The grass outside was damp from rain
We talked about the pleasure we felt
We tried not to speak of the pain

When you and I both realized
We weren’t meant to be
When you couldn’t keep the promises
That you whispered softly to me
When we knew it wasn’t gonna work
No matter how we wanted it to
When we had to move on to square one
‘Cause it was the better thing to do

I remember holding your fingers
And you’d release them suddenly
The moment I tasted your lying lips
And stopped believing the mystery

I was in denial of what was happening
I couldn’t end it that August night
Now I know I should have been honest
Like I used to be when we’d fight

Like that night
When you and I had realized
We weren’t meant to be
When you couldn’t keep the promises
That you whispered softly to me
When we knew it wasn’t gonna work
No matter how we wanted it to
When we had to move on to square one
‘Cause it was the better thing to do

I sit here on our front room couch
And the kids are at their Mom’s place
Just woke up & realized I’ve been dreamin’
Cause I get to see your joyful face
I look into your sienna eyes
And those lips I love to softly kiss
You’re the one I can’t live without
The one I’d go crazy about and miss

If we realized that cold August night
We weren’t meant to be
If you couldn’t keep the promises
That you whispered softly to me
If we knew it wasn’t gonna work
No matter how we wanted it to
If we moved on quickly to square one
‘Cause it was the better thing to do

I’m so relieved we didn’t conclude
Saying fare-thee-well would be
The better thing to do

Babe,

I’m so relieved we didn’t conclude
Saying fare-thee-well would be
The better thing to do…
