True Love Stays

He watches the waves
And thinks of the days
When he was young,
fun and in better shape
He’d go out with friends
On all those weekends
The lessons all stung
He dreamed of escape

Then a girl found him
Working out at a gym
His eyes looked at her
She knew right away
Out of all of the guys
He was the surprise
But he was an amateur

She wanted him to notice
She yearned for him to see
They’d be more than lovers
They could be meant to be
He was hung up on someone
But she tried harder anyway
To convince him it was love
There was nothing she could say
It was a game he wouldn’t play

He dreamt of a different place
Of a girl with a somber face
Who kissed him long ago
When he was seventeen
He had a damaged heart
It was torn all apart
But somehow it didn’t show
He wasn’t nice or mean

Still she wanted him to notice
She yearned for him to see
They’d be more than lovers
They could be meant to be
He was hung up on that girl
Who had been living far away
To convince him it was love
There was nothing she could say
It was a game he wouldn’t play

She was running out of time
He was denying himself from
What she thought was true
When she walked out the door
His broken heart hurt even more
Then by chance he met you

As he watches the waves
And thinks of those days
When he was young,
fun and in better shape
He’s happier than he was
And it’s really because
He met the right one
No, he didn’t escape

No, he didn’t escape
No, he didn’t escape
He put away his cape
And true love stayed

Oh, his true love stayed
Oh, true love stays
