At The Lake House

It’s warm in this place when it’s cold outside
I’m still here at the lake house where we met
We were just kids but it seems like yesterday
It was a moment frozen in time I won’t forget

You had a bright big smile and laughed at me
I was quiet and shy but not with you back then
We’d watch the geese before they flew away
And you came back to see me again and again

At the lake house
It was just you and me
At the lake house
We were so happy and free
Fishin’ in a rowboat
Wishin’ on falling stars
Not old enough to go to bars
And we weren’t fully grown
Out at the lake house
Where I now live alone

I’m out here while you’re in another’s arms
Thinkin’ ‘bout all those afternoons with you
We’d go on walks until we had to run back
I crushed on you and you already knew

At the lake house
It was just you and me
At the lake house
We were so happy and free
Sharin’ my poems with you
Hopin’ we’d share a kiss
Not knowin’ it’s you I’d miss
And weep at your gravestone
Out at the lake house
Where I now live all alone

Out at the lake house
Where I now live alone

Is It True You’re Single Again?

Heard a rumor the other night
If I’ve said too much say when
Is it true he’s left you all alone
Is it true you’re single again?
Do you need me to come over?
I’d be happy to soothe your pain
Don’t be afraid to hang with me
Is it true you’re single again?

I’ve been waiting in the wings for years now
Guess I’ve been jealous of all those lucky guys
Who got to take you on dates & romantic getaways
I don’t think anything I tell you will be a surprise

I don’t want to argue or fight
If I’ve said too much say when
Is it true he’s left you all alone
Is it true you’re single again?
Do you need me to come over?
I’d be happy to soothe your pain
Don’t be afraid to hang with me
Is it true you’re single again?

I’ve got poems I’ve written to express my longing
They’re from my soul and I’ll share them with you
Some are cheesy but some are heart-wrenching
And I think my dear it’s high time that you knew

I heard a rumor the other night
If I’ve said too much say when
Is it true he’s left you all alone
Is it true you’re single again?
Do you need me to come over?
I’d be happy to soothe your pain
Don’t be afraid to spill the tea
Is it true you’re single again?

Is it true you’re single
And ready to mingle
Is it true you’re single again?
Oh, baby,
Is it true you’re single again?

Colder Blood Than Mine

She had blue diamonds as eyes
Her lips tasted like sour apple pie
She smelled like smoke and patchouli
And swore like a dirty old guy
Her skin felt like sandpaper
She had the heart of a porcupine
Oh, I’m not sure why I fell for her
The girl with colder blood than mine

Her leather jacket had a skull & bones
There were blood stains on her jeans
She carried a blade in her back pocket
Her brother died from amphetamines
Her Daddy was a big truck driver
He was from below the Mason Dixon line
Somehow I drew her into my life
The girl with colder blood than mine

Once I saw her stab a greasy man
Because he tripped me and I fell
And she punched a girl so hard
They put her in an isolation cell
Her Momma was nothin’ like her
She was more like a Southern Belle
Who treated me like one of her own
But I was only under a wicked spell

One night I was at their house
And I got up to take a leak
The basement light was on
So I decided to take a peek
And damned if I didn’t see
Pics of me set up like a shrine
So I had to leave her behind
The girl with colder blood than mine

No I couldn’t walk the line, for
the girl with colder blood than mine

Went Against Their Wishes

They thought something was off with him
The moment he walked in and he met them
His cold hands, the calculated stares,
They were all Republicans, he was a Dem

They didn’t like his condescending tone
And his liberal freethinking ways
He was a Black Lives Matter supporter
And he believed in civil rights for Gays

And he loved her
She loved him, too
They couldn’t do anything
And she knew
It was freaking them out
She found him in the nick of time
Her partner in crime
Who ended up sleeping with the fishes
‘Cause he went against their wishes
Oooooh he went against their wishes

They said her and him should move closer
After they got married, it was 2 months later
But he got seriously hurt in an accident
Her lack of empathy made him hate her

As he was healing, she packed their things
All their wedding gifts, stuff they could take
They left their two dogs behind with friends
It was a journey they couldn’t make

And he loved her
She loved him as well
But could they be a good team
Only months could tell
It was freaking them out
Got a flat in Gallup, New Mexico
How was he to know
He’d end up sleeping with the fishes
‘Cause he went against their wishes
Oooooh he went against their wishes

When he said no
The family got pissed
Except one who planned it all
They rolled the dice he kissed
He had a way to combat them
It was covert and mean
It was the perfect plan
He’d create a big scene

Cause he loved her
She loved him as well
They all were quite a team
Her parents were holding the bell
He was freaking them out
They got rid of everyone he told
But he gave his attorney a note
Saying he went against their wishes
He might end up sleeping with the fishes
All cause he went against their wishes

Now he’s on a ship out in the West Indies
Mopping up the deck and cleaning dishes
All cause he went against their wishes
Oooooh he went against their wishes

Regrets of a Gone Girl

He changed his name before he moved there,
So no one would find him in that town
He tried to keep a hidden profile
Found a quick job and settled down

And soon as things got comfortable
All of a sudden, she appeared
Right there on his apartment doorstep
And he asked, “What are you doing here?”

She said,
I forgot to say goodbye
And I’m sorry for the way I treated you
When you’d reach out for my hand
I didn’t grip it back and you knew
Somethin’ wasn’t right
And out went the light
On a romance we thought was true
Oh, I’m sorry that I lied
And I’m ashamed I forgot to say goodbye…

He said come on in, and he asked her
If she’d like a cup of coffee & talk
She accepted and they sat there
Then they went for a little walk

And soon as they turned the corner
He said, I have to admit
When you were lying, I forgave you
It didn’t bother me a bit

When
you forgot to say goodbye
and for the way you treated me
When I reached out for your hand
And you blatantly refused
Somethin’ wasn’t right
And out went the light
On a romance we thought was true
Oh, I didn’t sigh or cry
When I awoke, and you hadn’t said goodbye

He had been on to her
And was prepared for what she’d do
If she were to return to him
It was then when she knew

Something was wrong with
The whole thing and she was screwed
He drew her in by moving on
And he suddenly changed his mood

You didn’t forget to say goodbye
You weren’t sorry for how you treated me
When I reached out for my hand
You didn’t grip it back and I still see
Somethin’ wasn’t right
And out went the light
On a romance you knew was untrue
You weren’t sorry you lied
You intentionally forgot to say goodbye…

He changed his name before he moved there,
So no one would find him in that town
He tried to keep a hidden profile
Found a quick job and settled down

And soon as things got comfortable
All of a sudden, she appeared
Right there on his apartment doorstep
And he asked, “What are you doing here?”

He asked, “What are you doing here?”

Lyrics Notes: A tribute to a few types of stories I've liked because of the intrigue and the mystery of the story. I kept it mysterious for that reason but it's up to each listener to put together the puzzle in their own mind of what happens next in the story. It is my job to tell a story but it's your job to interpret it to your liking, I think. I pulled myself out of telling the ending because for once, I want the listener to come up with their own conclusions. I figure that might be more fun for you all because many of you want to be more creative while listening which makes it a participatory song.

Nashville, Tennessee

He was out on a Tuesday
In his Chevy getting drunk
off a twenty four pack
of bottled Budweiser Lite
Thinkin’ ‘bout the girl
he fell in love with
When they were sixteen
And everythin’ was alright

He was wonderin’ what she
was up to as he hadn’t seen
her since they parked out
by the lake one Friday night
And she said it wasn’t
Workin’ out between them
But he was too heartbroken
To put up any kind of fight

He just said he was sorry
She said it’s not you it’s me
He sat there so confused
He thought how could this be
She drove him back home
He didn’t tell his family
She moved on from him
To Nashville, Tennessee

She was out on a Thursday
On a park bench with a friend
Sharing coffee and stories ‘bout
boys who didn’t have a clue
She brought up that moment
When she tested a boy’s truth
By telling him she was leavin’
Just to see what he would do

He just said he was sorry
She said it’s not you it’s me
He sat there so confused
He thought how could this be
She drove him back home
Didn’t tell her family, then
got news they were movin’
To Nashville, Tennessee

They both had been dreamin’
What it would’ve been like
If he ended up as her husband
And she’d become his wife

But there’s a twist in the story
She looked him up on Facebook
Then sent him a friend request
and he didn’t friend him back
Cause on the way home
After bingin’ on cheap beer
He ran through a stop light,
killin’ a man wearin’ a knapsack

In court he said he was sorry
To the judge and his attorney
He sat there so void and empty
Charged for murder, unintentionally
And as he sat there in prison
One day he got a letter from her
Said she was moving back home
From Nashville, Tennessee

With an orphan child of a lady
Gunned down by the man he killed
Before he took the Amtrak up
From Nashville, Tennessee
Seven years later in a prairie
An ex-prisoner married my mother,
The man who ran into my father
Who was from Nashville, Tennessee

It seems like a hell of a nightmare
But things turned out so perfectly
Oh, God knew what he was doin’
I’ve just earned my Law Degree
I’m workin’ for a Record Label
Time flew like a seagull over a sea
I sure am proud of my hometown
Nashville, Tennessee –

Oh, now I’ll never really leave
Music City, I’ll give my all to thee
My boyhood home, Nashville, Tennessee

If I Sleep Tonight

I’ve been emptyin’ my pens into my notebooks
This cabin’s fireplace barely has a flame inside
I’ve been watchin’ out the front door window
There’s nobody else in whom I can confide
None of these songs are good enough
My imagination isn’t hitting me quite right
I’m hoping I don’t dream of you, dear
If I sleep tonight, oh, sweetheart if I sleep tonight

Oh, why was I addicted to you my darlin’
You vanished when I thought you were a shining light
I’m just prayin’ tomorrow I won’t look pasty white
If I sleep tonight, oh, sweetheart if I sleep tonight

I don’t drink whiskey when I’m songwritin’
It won’t keep my tears from flowin’ down
I regret everythin’ between us that happened
Last time I was there with you in your town
No words can describe my heartbreak
And I can’t stop thinkin’ you’ll visit or call
I shoulda seen earlier what’s comin’
I shoulda read the writing on the wall

Oh, why was I addicted to you, darlin’
You vanished when I thought you were a shining light
I’m just prayin’ tomorrow I won’t look pasty white
If I sleep tonight, oh, sweetheart if I sleep tonight

Last I noticed, the good knives were stolen
And I know you must’ve found my hidden gun
if there’s a will, there’s a way ‘n they’ll find you
‘Cause it would be worse if you kill anyone
I’m wonderin’ if you will come back to fight
If you shoot me in cold blood only I’ll know why
Hope cops don’t find my corpse in the mornin’
And I pray to God I can get some sleep tonight

Oh, why was I addicted to you, darlin’
You vanished when I thought you were a shining light
I’m just prayin’ tomorrow I won’t look pasty white
If I sleep tonight, oh, sweetheart if I sleep tonight

Sweet baby Jesus, let me sleep tonight

When Daddy’s Drunk

Don’t be provoking him
When Daddy’s drunk
You shouldn’t be courageous
Unless you want your heart sunk

I’ve seen him choke Mama
And he’s hit me hard a few times
He’s been on the Evening News
For committing violent crimes

He’s done time in the jailhouse
But we don’t talk of it these days
I keep thinking he’ll leave us
But instead, he drinks and stays

So go hang out with friends
When Daddy’s drunk
It’s not likely that he’ll ever
Get out of his outgoing funk
When Daddy’s drunk
When Daddy’s drunk

I’ve seen him slap Sissy
He’s also fired his gun
After a bender, he won’t wake
Until we see the burning sun

He knows what he’s doin’
He said that he won’t stop
911’s on speed dial now
In case we need a cop

He’s done time in the jailhouse
But we don’t talk of it these days
I keep prayin’ he’ll leave us
But instead, he drinks and stays

So go hang out with friends
When Daddy’s drunk
It’s not likely he’ll ever
Get out of his ongoing funk
When Daddy’s drunk
Oh, it’s not likely he’ll ever
Get out of his ongoing funk
Just don’t ever be home
When Daddy’s drunk
When Daddy’s drunk
When Daddy’s drunk
Oh, when Daddy’s drunk

Miss You, Babe

The girls won’t leave me alone
They wanna know when you’ll be home
I said I’d ask cause I didn’t know
We miss you, babe
We miss you, babe

They wish I could cook like you
And I really don’t know what to do
You should know the truth
We miss you, babe
We miss you, babe

Our little one –
She reads to me at night
But she puts up a fight
She knows something’s not right
And the older one,
She understands you may be not coming back
She knows what happened on the train tracks
And sees me have nightly panic attacks

All I know is we hope you can wake
We’ll celebrate with a chocolate cake
I don’t know how much more I can take
We miss you, babe
We miss you, babe

But if you soon rise to Heaven above
Know I’ll take care of them, my love

The girls won’t leave me alone
They wanna call you on the phone
So you would always know
We miss you, babe
We miss you, babe

They wish I could be like you
And I really don’t know what to do
You should know the truth
They miss you, babe
I miss you, babe
Oh,
We miss you, babe
We miss you, babe
Miss you, babe
