Topics That Trigger Me

If you wanna know, I’ll tell you
the topics that trigger me
So you can hold your tongue
When you’re hellbent & angry

So you won’t use them as weapons
You’ll know better and refrain
From devastating me with them
From causing me unfixable pain

All because I trusted you completely
With topics that trigger me
All because I trusted you completely
With topics that trigger me

They may seem trivial to you
the topics that trigger me
They hurt like a sucker punch
Then I’ll wanna break free

So please, don’t use’em as weapons
You’ll know better and refrain
From dismantling with them
From causing nonreversible pain

All because I trusted you completely
With topics that trigger me
All because I trusted you completely
With topics that trigger me

Promise me you won’t purposely
Shoot me with these memories
Promise me that and I’ll be yours
Like protected land and pine trees
Like protected land and pine trees

All because I trusted you completely
With topics that trigger me
All because I trusted you completely
With topics that trigger me

Please don’t trigger me

American Woman and Man

He takes trains, planes, trucks or cars
Depending on where he travels to
He’s got his briefcase full of catalogs
Sales is something he’s born to do
He sells to people looking for answers
He sells for checks to send to his wife
Now, he’s just a money making machine
But he’s not having a wonderful life

So no wonder he drinks
No wonder he wants to heal his heart
Drinking at the affluent hotel bars
While he and his family live apart
He likes going home when he can
But he also loves living on the road
So no wonder he drinks
He’s the one carrying the load

And his wife back home understands
She keeps the house, does the chores
She knows her role and does it well
Washes the dishes, cleans the floors
She carefully manages their household
So the children can focus on school
But all the while she’s missing him
Her dedicated but exhausted fool

So no wonder she drinks
No wonder she wants to heal her heart
Card games and cocktails with friends
Ubers to and from the mini-mart
She likes seeing him when he’s there
But she loves him staying on the road
So no wonder she drinks
She’s a prisoner in their abode

They’re very different people
But they’re pretty much the same
They’ve been living like this for years
Since they’ve shared their last name

So no wonder they drink
Trapped themselves in their roles
Doing their best to provide for their kids
But it seems like they’ve sold their souls
They dream of sending them to college
They’re working as hard as they can
No wonder both drink
That American woman and man
That American woman and man

People We Know

People we know are lonely
People we know are afraid
People we know are hurting
From the games they’ve played

They didn’t know they were playin’
They just wanted happiness
But the walls got higher
Those are nasty frogs they kissed

And we try to cheer them up
Say they are worthy of more
We do our best to pull them from
That isolating heartbreak store
Where you pay for your mistakes
so you can quietly go
Oh, the ones who need us the most
Are all the people we know
The people we know

The heart goes through changes
But the hardest is a love that’s lost
You can’t seem to bargain
On how much it all will cost

You turn to friends and family
Sometimes they walk away too
But I hope this is a wakeup call
That person one day could be you

And they’ll try to cheer you up
Say you are worthy of so much more
They’ll do their best to pull you from
That isolating heartbreak store
Where you pay for your misfortunes
Then quietly allowed to go
Yeah the ones we need to be there
Are all the people we know

So
If you’re going through a hardship
If it’s all blown up in your face
If you cannot find the answers
After everyone gives you space

Reach out to the ones who are close
It’s in their eyes, the ones you trust
But if they don’t then get in touch with
All the people you know, if you must

And they’ll try to cheer you up
Say you are worthy of so much more
They’ll do their best to pull you from
That isolating heartbreak store
Where you pay for your misfortunes
Then quietly allowed to go
The ones who just might be there
Are all the people you know

Oh, those who’ll help us the most
Are all the people we know
The people we know
The people we know

Capitola

My toes are burning
It must have been the sand
When we were walking on the beach
And I was holding your sweet hand
I remember it all
The love we used to make
When you and I were younger then
I loved the tasty scones you’d bake

Now I sit here
In this wheelchair
And wonder if
I’m gonna die alone

I wanna come back to Capitola
So we can start all over
So we can do it again
Stroll in the village
Get some Pizza my Heart
Ice Cream to cool our lips
We swore we wouldn’t break apart
But most of all, I wanna come back
Come back to Capitola
Good ol’ Capitola
‘Cause then I’d be where you are

My heart is hurting
I miss your smiling eyes
Behind those hipster Ray Bans
You were a bombshell and so wise
I remember it all
The memories we made
And admiring the paintings
We almost bought by Thomas Kincade

Now I wait here
For my ride home
And I pay daily
That I don’t die alone

I wanna come back to Capitola
So we can start all over
So we can do it again
Stroll in the village
Get some Pizza my Heart
Ice Cream to cool our lips
We swore we wouldn’t break apart
But most of all, I wanna come back
Come back to Capitola
Good ol’ Capitola
‘Cause then I’d be where you are
I’d be where you are

Obsessed With Kelly

I’m obsessed with Kelly
I can’t get her out of my head
I’m obsessed with Kelly
She’s probably home in her bed
Cause she’s not at this dance
I may not have any chance
But I’m obsessed with Kelly
And all those things she said

Like
She never wanted me
She never needed me
I was never on her mind
She never wanted me
She never needed me
She never could find
Herself attracted to me
I’m just a weirdo she knows
And if I ever ask her out
She won’t accept my rose

I’m obsessed with Kelly
But she’s dating another guy
I’m obsessed with Kelly
Man, I really don’t know why
Cause she’s always mean
She makes fun of my Zine
I’m obsessed with Kelly
Even though she makes me cry

Sayin’
She never wanted me
She never needed me
I was never on her mind
She never wanted me
She never needed me
She never could find
Herself attracted to me
I’m just a weirdo she knows
And if I ever ask her out
She won’t accept my rose

Maybe it’s true when they say
What we can’t have, we need
And I’m addicted to the pain
I keep thinkin’ I’ll succeed
In makin’ her mine
It’ll take some time
She’s so damn hard to read
But I’m obsessed with Kelly
The girl who’ll never love me

I’m obsessed with Kelly
The girl who’ll never love me
The girl who’ll never love me
The girl who’ll never love me

The Movie We Made

It’s the movie we made
Without filming it to be shown
It was just for ourselves
It was for us alone

It’s the movie we made
It oftentimes in my mind
It’s a past I can’t shake
Or even get behind

It’s the people I left
It’s the ones who left me
It’s the regrets I have
It’s why I’m not free
Of the battles we fought
They almost took me down
But here I am still
Kickin’ ‘round this town

Out on Vega Road
Stands a house on the hill
It’s where my friends lived
Where I took a red pill

I bought their kindness
I bought their upset
It was a few short years
That I’d never forget

It’s the people I left
It’s the ones who left me
It’s the regrets I have
It’s why I’m not free
Of the battles we fought
That almost took me down
But here I am still
Kickin’ ‘round this town

The Palm Avenue house
Still looks the same
As it did when the mailbox
Had their last name

And I think about them
Those days we spent
But I cannot believe
Where all the time went

It’s the people who died
It’s the places I cried
It’s why I was right
To take off that night
To go find my old friends
To make my amends
It wasn’t for show
But they’ll never know

When on Virginia Street
I see the house is still green
It’s the place I’d practice
A new song or scene
And the Doblers still live
In 815, the house across
Last I heard of Craig,
He’ll soon be the farm’s boss

It’s the people still here
Those who won’t return
It’s all those promises made
It’s the hours I burn
Creating the new things
And setting fire to the past
The movie we made,
It’s one that won’t last

The movie we made
It’s one that won’t last

Free of Me

I’ll never forget it
What she said that day
It was cold and cloudy
I was on my way
To her studio apartment
Like we planned
She sounded different
I didn’t understand

It was pouring down buckets
On Highway seventeen
Said “Don’t bother coming”
She didn’t want to meet

She said
You’re free to be
Free to be
Free to be
Free of me
You’re free to be
Free of me

She was talking crazy
I was obsessed with her
I couldn’t stop thinking
About how we were
But here was this girl
Shutting her heart’s door
On a 7 minute phone call
But I wanted more

I got up to her place
She lived in Sunnyvale
We sat down outside
Her face was pale

As she said
You’re free to be
Free to be
Free to be
Free of me
Yeah, you’re free to be
Free of me

A freezing breeze
Hit me hard and fast
I had faith in what
I assumed would last
I said my goodbyes
And put on a tape
She successfully made
Her grand escape

She was
Free to be
Free to be
Free to be
Free of me
Yeah so free to be
Free of me
Yeah she desperately
needed to be free of me
She desperately
Needed to be free of me

Just Your Turn

You got to know my Mom and Dad
Then they brought him back into view
He had come home from the service
And he remembered kissing you

Back at a house party in the 80’s
It was a night he never forgot
I remember he came home that night
And said you were totally hot

But now you’re both older
So much older than before
You blazed through other guys
But his heart was broken and sore
You might think he really loves you
There’s a lesson you could learn
He might never be yours, no
This is just your turn
Oh, he might never be yours,
This is just your turn

Dad introduced you to her, bro
He once introduced a girl to me
She worked for him in Accounting
But she didn’t turn out to be

A one guy kind of woman
She shattered me one day in July
I found out my friend said to her
I was a one woman kind of guy

And now that we’re both older
So much older than before
She’s blazed through other men
My heart was broken and sore
I thought we had the real deal
But there’s a lesson I learned
I was never gonna be hers
It was just my turn
Oh, I was never gonna be hers
It was just my turn

So I see you now together
Holding hands and having fun
I don’t know if it will work out
One of you might cut and run

But I still must have faith in you
Maybe Dad opened an amazing door
Maybe you both deserve each other
God’s healing what was broken and sore
You’re both happy, that’s what matters
I hope you never have to learn
That you don’t belong with each other
And this is just your turn

Oh, I pray to heaven above,
For true love, it’s just your turn
Oh, I pray to heaven above,
For true love, it’s just your turn

The Truth About Me and You

When you learned the truth about me
Did you see what you thought I’d be
Did you have feelings inside
That you wouldn’t hide
Did you analyze what you could only see

When you learned the truth about you
Did your heart tell you it already knew
Did you really come clean
How you’ve been so mean
Did you recognize what we’ve been through

It’s unrelenting and unreal
What we do and how we feel
And there’s not much that can be done
When you can’t tell me how you are
On the beach, at home or in our car
You never know, it could be fun
More fun than keeping secrets
And telling it all to your close friends
Deeper than anything we’ll ever do
And oh, that’s the truth
Oh you know it’s the truth
That’s the truth about me and you

When you learned the truth about us
Did you ponder about it all, because
I thought about it night after night
How something could remain right
After all the wrong it always was

It’s unrelenting and unreal
What we do and how we feel
And there’s not much that can be done
When you can’t tell me how you are
On the couch, in bed or from afar
You never know, it could be fun
More fun than keeping secrets
And telling it all to your close friends
Deeper than anything we’ll ever do
And oh, that’s the truth
Oh you know it’s the truth
That’s the truth about me and you

The lies, the hurt, the pain
Disappear and come back again
They don’t stop and I am confused
If it’s my soul feeling out of control
And only the half of a whole
That doesn’t see we’re both abused

It’s unrelenting and unreal
What we do and how we feel
And there’s not much that can be done
When you can’t tell me how you are
On the beach, at home or in our car
You never know, it could be fun
More fun than keeping secrets
And telling it all to your close friends
Deeper than anything we’ll ever do
And oh, that’s the truth
Oh you know it’s the truth
That’s the truth about me and you
That’s the truth about me and you

That’s the truth about me and you.
