The Truth About Me and You

When you learned the truth about me
Did you see what you thought I’d be
Did you have feelings inside
That you wouldn’t hide
Did you analyze what you could only see

When you learned the truth about you
Did your heart tell you it already knew
Did you really come clean
How you’ve been so mean
Did you recognize what we’ve been through

It’s unrelenting and unreal
What we do and how we feel
And there’s not much that can be done
When you can’t tell me how you are
On the beach, at home or in our car
You never know, it could be fun
More fun than keeping secrets
And telling it all to your close friends
Deeper than anything we’ll ever do
And oh, that’s the truth
Oh you know it’s the truth
That’s the truth about me and you

When you learned the truth about us
Did you ponder about it all, because
I thought about it night after night
How something could remain right
After all the wrong it always was

It’s unrelenting and unreal
What we do and how we feel
And there’s not much that can be done
When you can’t tell me how you are
On the couch, in bed or from afar
You never know, it could be fun
More fun than keeping secrets
And telling it all to your close friends
Deeper than anything we’ll ever do
And oh, that’s the truth
Oh you know it’s the truth
That’s the truth about me and you

The lies, the hurt, the pain
Disappear and come back again
They don’t stop and I am confused
If it’s my soul feeling out of control
And only the half of a whole
That doesn’t see we’re both abused

It’s unrelenting and unreal
What we do and how we feel
And there’s not much that can be done
When you can’t tell me how you are
On the beach, at home or in our car
You never know, it could be fun
More fun than keeping secrets
And telling it all to your close friends
Deeper than anything we’ll ever do
And oh, that’s the truth
Oh you know it’s the truth
That’s the truth about me and you
That’s the truth about me and you

That’s the truth about me and you.

Back to Seascape

Remember when we took a holiday
Up the coast so you and I could play
And lay down on a blanket you bought
In a small town whose name I forgot

You wore a one piece under a cotton dress
I didn’t have a need for any more or less
My back got burned but you got a tan
You said you loved that I was your man

So take me back
Take me back
Take me back
Take me back
Take me back to Seascape
So we could be in love again
Take me back to Seascape
So we could be in love again

I was happier when you held me there
I would run my fingers through your hair
And we didn’t have much else to do
You cared for me, I deeply adored you

You wore a one piece under a cotton dress
I had no need for anything more or less
Your heart was open and so was mine
As we shared a bottle of raspberry wine

So take me back
Take me back
Take me back
Take me back
Take me back to Seascape
So we could be in love again
Take me back to Seascape
So we could be in love again

I cannot forget our passionate past
Dear, I cannot forget those days
When you and I took a break
Before you said I was a mistake

You wore a one piece under a cotton dress
I didn’t have a need for any more or less
My back got burned but you got a tan
You said you loved that I was your man

So take me back
Take me back
Take me back
Take me back
Take me back to Seascape
So we could be in love again
Take me back to Seascape
So we could be in love again

Betty

They sold her a story
Told her she'd go far
She was a looker & a beauty
and she was gonna be a star

They didn't have to polish her
She had natural charm & poise
Other girls wanted to be like her
She was attractive to all of the boys

Oh, but Betty was lonely
No one knew how she felt inside
She was looking for answers
in everything she tried
Acting, Modeling, all of the Men
Nothing could quench her thirst
Oh, Betty was lonely
with a heart so big it burst

In the public eye she shined
But privately she was a mess
At all those red carpet premieres
They just cared about Betty's dress

She had no idea who she was
Everyone close told her what to do
One night at her home in the Hills
Betty broke down and no one knew

Oh, how Betty was lonely
In that mansion with no pride
The media had so many questions
But behind her smile, she'd hide
Nobody knew her struggle
Nobody knew Betty's inner pain
Not even those who loved her
They thought they'd see her again

They found Betty years later
In a roadside diner in the Midwest
She became a small town waitress
Betty was happy in a regular dress

She said she could live without
the glory, attention and fame
with a quiet, normal life
and her maiden name

And now Betty's not lonely
serving up malts and fries
If people ask her about her past
She simply says she got wise
She knew she'd never be happy there
Being someone she didn't want to be
Some people just are meant for
living with dignity and privacy
and that's Betty, that's Betty, that's Betty.

Healing The Hurt Inside

If you see her walking along the beach
Watching the ocean as it smoothly sways
And wondering what's going on with her
She's sorting out memories of those days

When she held that boy so tightly
When they'd feel so free outside
When the answer to their problems
Was in a Harley Davidson ride
Wondering if she'll ever see him again
She's knowing it might take a while
She's healing the hurt inside of her
and she could use a friendly smile

If you feel like it quietly approach her
She'll see you as a pleasant surprise
Just be naturally the person you are
As you gently look into her eyes
And she'll often look away from you
but she'll welcome your kind soul
Know she'll still be thinking of him
and when he played that leading role

When she held that boy so tightly
When they'd feel so free outside
When the answer to their problems
Was in a Harley Davidson ride
Wondering if she'll ever see him again
or if he'll write letters, maybe call
She may be healing the hurt inside of her
But you could end up being her windfall

You could end up being her windfall

Loving Kindness

The gift that keeps on giving
The one that delights me so
The one that fills me up inside
I have it in me wherever I go

Even when we’re far apart
You might laugh but it’s true
The gift that keeps on giving
Is loving kindness from you

The gift that keeps on giving
Is loving kindness from you
It’s in the heart that gives it away
Its important to honestly do

So when you wonder what to give
Someone who has everything
Well, the gift they’ll treasure most
Isn’t that Pearl Necklace,
Sterling Silver, or Tiffany ring
Once they’re no longer new
The gift that keeps on giving
Is loving kindness from you

What this world needs so much
Is loving kindness from you

It’s loving kindness from you
It’s loving kindness from you
It’s loving kindness from you

True Love Stays

He watches the waves
And thinks of the days
When he was young,
fun and in better shape
He’d go out with friends
On all those weekends
The lessons all stung
He dreamed of escape

Then a girl found him
Working out at a gym
His eyes looked at her
She knew right away
Out of all of the guys
He was the surprise
But he was an amateur

She wanted him to notice
She yearned for him to see
They’d be more than lovers
They could be meant to be
He was hung up on someone
But she tried harder anyway
To convince him it was love
There was nothing she could say
It was a game he wouldn’t play

He dreamt of a different place
Of a girl with a somber face
Who kissed him long ago
When he was seventeen
He had a damaged heart
It was torn all apart
But somehow it didn’t show
He wasn’t nice or mean

Still she wanted him to notice
She yearned for him to see
They’d be more than lovers
They could be meant to be
He was hung up on that girl
Who had been living far away
To convince him it was love
There was nothing she could say
It was a game he wouldn’t play

She was running out of time
He was denying himself from
What she thought was true
When she walked out the door
His broken heart hurt even more
Then by chance he met you

As he watches the waves
And thinks of those days
When he was young,
fun and in better shape
He’s happier than he was
And it’s really because
He met the right one
No, he didn’t escape

No, he didn’t escape
No, he didn’t escape
He put away his cape
And true love stayed

Oh, his true love stayed
Oh, true love stays

Struggling State

When you’re struggling
Do you change course
Or are you stubborn
Like an old and bitter horse

Who’s been out in the barn
For some 10 years or more
When you’re struggling
Do you wonder what it’s all for?

When you’re struggling
Do you feel that pain
Or do you feel pleasure
Like you’re back home again

As a child with your Grandma
At the old department store
When you’re struggling
Do you curl up on the floor?

Cause when I’m struggling
It’s hard to figure things out
It’s hard to come to terms
With what it’s all about

When I’m struggling
I’m filled with fear and doubt
Overwhelmed like worms
Trapped in a water spout

And I’m falling
And I’m falling
I’m falling
I just keep falling
I’m falling
And I can’t seem
To stand up straight
When I’m in a
Struggling state.

Santa Cruz Young

Dedicated to my brothers, Russell Gray & Jeff Gray

Just to ride down that trail again
To see the whole Monterey Bay
And to feel that strong breeze
Against my golden brown face
Just to walk in that neighborhood
To Westlake with my schoolmates
And not have too worry about
What was on our dinner plates

When we were Santa Cruz young
We didn’t think too much about
Things our parents were doing
Like who they were countersuing
Or who had extra special clout
We only cared about each other
Fitting in and good sportsmanship
Riding our bikes around UCSC
We were wild and oh so crazy
As we’d go to the beach for a dip

I remember playing capture the flag
I remember how it all was and felt
And I remember my first crushes
How I thought my heart would melt
I remember my first childhood kiss
With a girl from down the block
And how my Daddy worked so hard
While Mom stayed in and was his rock

Just to be in my old room again
Just to listen to that old record play
And to be around my older brothers
So the mem’ries wouldn’t fade
If I could go back in to Calvin Place
Or hike to the bottom of the hill
I’d want to also go and visit
Ron, Shirley, Christine & Bill

When we were Santa Cruz young
We didn’t think too much about
Things our parents were doing
Like who they were countersuing
Or who had extra special clout
We only cared about each other
Baseball cards and Harvey West
Fitting in and real good manners
Visiting with the Catletts & Danners
And making sure we did our best

Just to ride down that trail again
To see the whole Monterey Bay
And to feel that strong breeze
Against my golden brown face

And to feel that strong breeze
Against my golden brown face

When we were Santa Cruz young
Oh, when we were Santa Cruz young.

The Last Time You See Me

The last time you see me
I hope I’m best that I can be
I hope I’m not stuck in a tree
The last time you see me

The last time that we talk
I hope it’s after a nice walk
Hope I’m not watchin’ the clock
The last time that we talk

I pray I’m not mean or filled with spite
I wish for a healthy exchange of words
Even if we’re out for a quick drink or bite
I hope we’re joyful like a couple of birds

The last time you look in my eyes
I would prefer it wasn’t a surprise
I hope we hug before our goodbyes
The last time you look in my eyes

I pray we’re not angry, instead at peace
I wish we’ll be pleasant and get along
I hope you know I’ve changed since then
And deep inside I know I was wrong

The last time you see me
I hope you’re happy and smile
I hope my friend, we reconcile
The last time you see me

The last time you see me.
