Whatever It Takes

After we broke up I was down for the count
So I thought about what I was going to do
I wondered if I should drown my sorrows
With bourbon to heal the pain of losing you
But something else tugged at my soul
It was the Book Cafe’ down the road
So I got into my old yellow VW Thing
And from that point on, the night flowed

Ran into an old friend of mine in the lot
who I hadn’t seen in about twenty years
She happened to be in Capitola briefly
So instead of taking her out for beers
We had strawberry rhubarb pie and coffee
and shared the latest news from our lives
We also talked about how two people can
have a romance that overcomes and survives

Do whatever it takes, don’t say that’s the breaks
Fight for what you have, not what you need
Seek out information, guidance and also read
Do whatever it takes for your love to succeed

We saw a movie at the 41st Avenue Playhouse
It was a Romantic Comedy and was so great
I had this question burning inside me for her
And afterwards I wondered if it was too late
To tell her I’d been thinking of her for so long
And I hoped to go out with her again real soon
She turned to me, said about the same thing,
And we gently kissed under the Harvest Moon

And we’ll
Do whatever it takes, won’t say that’s the breaks
We’ll fight for what we have and not what we need
We’ll seek out information, get guidance and read
We’ll do whatever it takes for our love to succeed

Oh, we’ll do whatever it takes for our love to succeed
